Historical Fiction

Did you know about the Scott O’Dell Award?  If you like to read books set in different historical times, you need to check out this award.

My favorite past winner of this award is The Game of Silence , written and illustrated by Louise Erdrich.  This book is the sequel to The Birchbark House and the prequel to The Porcupine Year

The series is about Omakayas, a young Ojibwa girl living on an island in Lake Superior in the mid-1800′s, just as the Europeans are arriving and pushing people off of their land.  These books are exciting, sad, magical (Omakayas communicates with animals), and really give you a good perspective of what life was like then.  I consider this book the Native American perspective on “The Little House on the Prairie” series.
